Via Ferrata
The “Iron Way” in the Red River Gorge, KY
Getting folks from all walks of life introduced to the thrill and exposure of rock climbing in a challenging yet approachable way is what Southeast is all about!
Welcome to the first United States Via Ferrata!
That’s right the Southeast Mountain Guides Via Ferrata has been around since September of 2001 when it got its humble start as Torrent Falls Climbing Adventure with the original owners, Mark and Kathy Meyer. Their daughter, Nicole, bought the company in 2017 and renamed the company Southeast Mountain Guides. Since then, several others have been established in the USA, now totaling more than 20 courses. None of this growth would be possible without you, so truly, thank you for your continued support and dedication.
So what is a Via Ferrata? They’ve been gaining popularity recently, but they have their origin in the world wars as a way to transport troops across mountainous terrain, turning previously impassable terrain into accessible passes. ‘Via Ferrata’ is an Italian term meaning “iron path” or literally “the way of iron.” It comprises iron rungs drilled and epoxied into rock faces used as hand and footholds as well as a cable bolted to the rock every 5-8 feet which climbers are clipped to at all times on the course. The iron rungs eliminate the need for climbing specific footwear; all that is required is a set of VF tethers, climbing harness, and helmet, all of which can be provided by Southeast at no additional cost. These tethers also come with a rest clip allowing a climber to clip into the rungs or cable almost anywhere to take in the views.
The Southeast Mountain Guides Via Ferrata is an unguided but supervised course that climbs continuously through six different sections. There are six exit points that climbers can leave the course to hike back to the base or their vehicle. Climbers can pick up where they left off or complete sections over again. There are beginner friendly sections all the way up to advanced sections and even an expert section. You can climb ladders, cross suspension bridges, or even balance across a tight-rope walk. So plan a trip today to spend at least 4 hours challenging and conquering our course. Climb solo or bring as many as 120 friends climbing at one time, it is one of the best things to do in the Red River Gorge!
