Climbing in the Red captivates climbers for a lifetime. Known for its world-renowned sandstone, the area boasts thousands of routes, each uniquely varied in style, technique, and grade. But what makes it particularly great for beginners?
One could argue that the
easy access of the Red makes this area so good for beginners. Here are some examples.
1. Bruise Brothers (Muir Valley)
This crag sets the gold standard for beginner-friendly climbing in the Southeast. With a variety of well-bolted, easier routes, Bruise Brothers is perfect for those starting out. The approach is short and easy, with well-marked trails and a spacious parking lot. The base areas are flat and comfortable, featuring benches and practice spots to build skills. Alongside beginner routes, you’ll also find some moderate challenges, making this crag an excellent spot for progression. Be mindful that this popular crag can get overcrowded. Please be respectful and consider other crag options.
2. Fortress (North Gorge)
Fortress is a trad climber’s paradise, offering solid rock, great stances, and numerous beginner-friendly trad routes. Classics like Bedtime for Bonzo and Party Time are ideal for those venturing into multi-pitch climbing. The historic crag combines great climbing with breathtaking views, making it a memorable destination for aspiring trad climbers.
3. Hazel Hollow (PMRP)
A newer addition to the Red’s crags, Hazel Hollar has quickly become a favorite for beginners. Its short approach leads to two standout routes, Hazelnut Fairy and The Hazelnut Child, which are perfect for first leads. The area also features longer, more challenging climbs, including the popular 5.9 route Hazel Dormouse.
4. Crossroads (PMRP)
Crossroads offers a range of climbing styles with grades for every ability. Beginner-friendly highlights include Boilerplate and Spoiler Bait, two 5.8 sport climbs featuring fun, plate-like holds. The flat, scenic approach and mix of slab, overhang, and trad routes make Crossroads a versatile and enjoyable crag for climbers of all levels.
5. Gold Coast (PMRP)
Gold Coast provides variety for both sport and trad climbers. Beginner-friendly trad routes like
Futuristic Testpiece (5.4) and
The Perfect Pint (5.4) share the wall with fun sport climbs like
Lucky Duck Soup (5.5) and
Sunny the Boxer (5.9). With options for progressing climbers, this crag is a must-visit for a day of exploration.
